Supporting the original inference is dialogue in the script that was never shot or perhaps shot and not used. After Ollie asks Irena, “What did she say, darling?” he receives this response:
Irena (slowly, seriously): If this were any night but my wedding night … if you were any man but my husband … I would not tell you.
As for the “Cat Woman” herself, Elizabeth Russell—a divorcee in 1942, raising a young son—will also be sensitive in her late years about the lesbian interpretation, claiming that she had just tried to give “the impression of mystery.” Also, she wasn’t happy that Lewton and Bodeen had decided—probably for purpose of seeming Serbian kinship—to have Simone Simon dub Elizabeth’s “Moja sestra.”
“Do you know,” said Elizabeth, “Val Lewton later told me that was the biggest mistake he ever made—letting her dub my line!”
Meanwhile, Simone Simon apparently has a regret or two about Elizabeth Russell. “I remember Elizabeth Russell, naturally,” Simon told me, “because she was so striking!” Yet on that memorable shooting day in 1942, Simone—possibly jealous that Elizabeth is stealing the attention, maybe feeling blown away by a feline presence that exceeds her own, perhaps just devilishly eager to wrap up the scene—pulls a star stunt. Jane Randolph will remember:
We were sitting at a table in a café and Simone deliberately took her drink, and just spilled it down the front of her whole pale blue silk suit. Well, that stopped production…. She’d do things like that!
